Looks Like Christmas Came Early
The other week, I'd gone to Costco for the usual shopping, when all of a sudden I realize the Christmas trees that had been put up at the center of the store. The problem? October's still fresh on everyone's minds. People are busy raiding for last-minute candy and scheming up Halloween costumes. The last thing they're thinking about is candy canes. Then why are stores and retailers forcing Santa Claus to pay an early visit?
The main reason is advertising. Think about it. If they can successfully get people into a festive mood, it means more money for them. When you see nutcrackers on sale, you may think to yourself, "Well, maybe I should stock up on the holiday decorations...after all, the cheapest way to go is to get all the Christmas items before the prices go up!" And this is exactly the reaction they want from you.
Stores want you to fall in love with Christmas. They want to drown you in the festive holiday music, in the beauty of the trees, in the food and gifts and presents and oh, so much more! It's a way to hypnotize you into buying their products, whether you need it or not.
There's a name for what stores are brainwashing you into doing. It's called the "Christmas creeps". The traditional holiday shopping season is expected to start the day after Thanksgiving - this was how Black Friday became so popular. But the Christmas creeps push it back, even more, introducing Christmas to its costumers as early as October.
There isn't much of a trick to avoiding the scams stores try to pull on you. You can try sitting at home doing all your shopping on Amazon or some other online store, but soon enough they're going to pull out their back of tricks as well. All I can recommend is that you try not your attention very much. Resist the temptations radiating from the red and greens of the holidays. But in all honesty, if you simply can't resist all the joy pulled on by the store...like they say, "If you can't beat them, join them."
I wonder how far stores are going to push back Christmas now. If they can push it to October, what stops them from starting in September? August? Who knows, maybe you'll soon start seeing Santa popping up in early July! Nevertheless, people are always happy celebrating the holidays, and all stores are, too!
