Pet Cancer Awareness Month!
Hooray for November, a time for fall leaves and pumpkin spice lattes!
However, this November marks another special event as well — that’s right, it’s Pet Cancer Awareness Month! Cancer is a leading disease-related disease for many pets, including dogs and cats. It’s important to bring awareness to this topic, as doing so will allow you to be more cognizant of your own pet’s health.
What can you do this month to show your support for Pet Cancer Awareness Month? I have some tips written down below!
Check up on your pet! Make sure your pet is healthy and happy, although I’m sure you have already been doing that. However, make sure to pay close attention to your dog or cat’s behavior to see if anything is off at any time. Keep an eye on their diet, as many dog and cat parents often don’t give it as much attention as they should. Ensure what your pet is eating is safe for them; for instance, some traditional dog foods can contain toxins such as aflatoxin B1, which is a dangerous carcinogen you do not want your dog to be ingesting. Be mindful of your pet’s eating, and if you have any doubts, talk to your veterinarian. In addition to this, make sure your pet isn’t losing weight, does not have diarrhea, loss of appetite, or loss of interest in playing. All of these may be early signs, so if you have any doubts never be afraid to clear it up with your local veterinarian.
Donate to foundations that are treating pets with cancer! Places such as the Blue Buffalo Pet Cancer Awareness Center is accepting monetary donations. All donations are directly sent to clinics and labs that are dedicated to studying the prevention and treatment of canine and feline cancer. According to their website, they also raise funds to support organizations that help families cover costly pet cancer treatments to those who cannot afford it. If you are interested in helping out this way, please do more research and feel free to donate — it will be greatly appreciated by pets and pet owners everywhere!
Educate yourself about cancer! Interested in learning more about canine and feline cancer? There are plenty of resources online that goes more in-depth on the many different types of cancers found in pets, along with the recommended treatments given to them. For instance, pets can be susceptible to lymphoma, spleen cancer, bone or joint cancer, hepatic cancer, thoracic cancer, bladder cancer, oral cancer, and many others. Although it may seem scary at first, it’s important to acknowledge these illnesses and be aware of them for the future.
